Il Colle Rosso di Montalcino 2022 is a traditional expression of 100% Sangiovese from Montalcino, produced by Caterina Carli at the small family estate Il Colle. The wine brings together fruit from vineyards in different parts of the denomination, combining the cooler character of the historic Il Colle vineyards with fruit from the warmer southeastern side of Montalcino.
Caterina Carli follows a traditional, vineyard-focused approach, with organic farming, careful grape selection, spontaneous fermentation and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. This restrained use of wood allows the Sangiovese and the character of each vintage to remain at the centre of the wine.
2022 was a particularly hot and dry vintage. As the estate explains on the bottle itself, the intense conditions and reduced sunlight exposure affected the vines’ photosynthetic performance. To help the vineyards cope with the stress, they maintained high levels of organic matter and worked the soils to interrupt capillary water loss and protect the vine canopy. It is a revealing example of Il Colle’s philosophy: adapting the work in the vineyard to the conditions of each year rather than forcing a predetermined style.
The wine is intense and structured, with notes of pomegranate, plum, juniper, orange blossom, sandalwood, sage and pepper. The palate is savoury and energetic, with vibrant tannins, balanced acidity and a long, dry finish. A serious Rosso di Montalcino with unusual depth and the structure to develop further in bottle.
