Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo 2023 by Franchino is a pure and vibrant expression of Alto Piemonte, produced in the hills surrounding Gattinara from 100% Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna.
While Gattinara DOCG represents the estate’s long-aged, structured wine, Coste della Sesia offers a more immediate and energetic interpretation of the same volcanic territory. The vineyards, located on hillside exposures between Lurghe, Guardia and Borella, grow on soils of volcanic origin rich in iron, porphyry and granite.
Fermented in cement and aged for 18 months in oak, this Nebbiolo balances floral elegance with tension and sapid depth. It is structured yet agile, traditional yet accessible.
A direct and authentic expression of Northern Piedmont.
Why Gattinara Matters
In the mid-19th century, Gattinara was considered more prestigious than Barolo. The Italian writer Mario Soldati even dedicated a short story to it, titled “Un sorso di Gattinara.”
Historical documents dating back to 1446 refer to “Vitibus Spanis,” meaning vines of Spanna — the local name for Nebbiolo. This confirms the deep roots of the grape in Alto Piemonte, where volcanic soils and Alpine influence shape a more austere and mineral expression compared to Langhe Nebbiolo.
After a decline in the 1970s, Gattinara experienced a steady revival, culminating in DOCG status in 1990. Today it remains one of Northern Piedmont’s most distinctive and historically significant wines.
