Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2024 by Cascina Elena comes from Rocchetta Belbo, in Piedmont’s Alta Langa hills. Made entirely from Nebbiolo — the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco — it offers a fresh, approachable expression of this celebrated variety.

The grapes come from a young vineyard cultivated organically. Fermentation in concrete is followed by 12 months of ageing across concrete, stainless steel and wood, preserving the fruit while allowing the tannins to settle.

Fragrant red berries, rose and violet lead into a lively palate with fine tannins and a savoury finish. A versatile red for the table, from pasta with ragù to roast poultry and semi-mature cheeses.

Nebbiolo grapes from a young, organically cultivated vineyard in the hills around Rocchetta Belbo. The estate’s small vineyard terraces are surrounded by woodland, with much of the vineyard work carried out by hand.

Vinification:

After destemming, the grapes ferment in concrete tanks. Following separation from the skins, the wine ages in a combination of concrete, stainless steel and wooden vessels. The separate lots are blended after 12 months and bottled.

Tasting Notes:

Bright ruby red with subtle garnet reflections. Red berries, rose and violet are accompanied by delicate spice and hints of forest floor. The palate is dry, fresh and medium-bodied, with fine tannins, a savoury character and a clean, gently floral finish.

Rocchetta Belbo, Alta Langa – Piedmont

Cascina Elena is a small artisan winery in Rocchetta Belbo, in Piedmont’s Alta Langa hills. Founded in 2020, it brings together Filippo, a Roman winemaker with experience in Tuscany, and Peter and Elaine, two New Yorkers who found a home in this quiet corner of Piedmont.

The vineyards form a natural amphitheatre surrounded by woodland, at elevations between 420 and 530 metres. Small terraces and restored dry-stone walls follow the contours of the hills, where marl and limestone alternate with clay and sandy soils.

Organic farming, careful manual work and the biodiversity of the surrounding forest shape the estate’s approach. In the cellar, the aim is to preserve the character of the grapes and each vintage, producing wines that reflect the freshness and individuality of Alta Langa.
