Gattinara 2022 by Franchino is a traditional expression of Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte, produced in the historic hills of Gattinara in the province of Vercelli.
Made from 100% Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna, this wine reflects the austere and mineral character of the territory. The vineyards, located in the areas of Lurghe, Guardia and Borella, grow on volcanic-origin soils rich in iron, porphyry and granite, giving the wine structure, tension and elegance.
Fermented in cement and aged for at least 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks, Franchino’s Gattinara embodies the classical style of Northern Piedmont: firm, structured and built for longevity.
It does not chase softness. It pursues depth.
Why Gattinara Matters
In the mid-19th century, Gattinara was considered more prestigious than Barolo. The Italian writer Mario Soldati even dedicated a short story to it, titled “Un sorso di Gattinara.”
Historical documents dating back to 1446 refer to “Vitibus Spanis,” meaning vines of Spanna — the local name for Nebbiolo. This confirms the deep roots of the grape in Alto Piemonte, where volcanic soils and Alpine influence shape a more austere and mineral expression compared to Langhe Nebbiolo.
After a decline in the 1970s, Gattinara experienced a steady revival, culminating in DOCG status in 1990. Today it remains one of Northern Piedmont’s most distinctive and historically significant wines.
